Do people really think others are so dense they don't understand what's going on? Or is that just my cynicism talking?

People definitely do, thinking that others are as dense a black hole is the same as categorizing them or stereotyping them. It's another way to see the world through such a lens that they often don't know what is going on or they aren't able to get the full picture.
