Do schools not teach kids the right thing?

right so im cleverish, im 16. I can do geography, speak almost fluent French, I can do trigonometry, pythag, standard deviation, spearmans rank of coefficient correlation...etc all clever thingslike that but I can't actually do something basic like operate a washing machine... I can cook and clean and stuff but I know loads my age and older who can only cook beans on toast! They don't know how to dry or clean clothes, hoover, or anything! ...yet they're really clever. I don't think were taught the right kind of skills. Wen am I Eva gonna need to know the division of x2-42X45c or something..shouldnt we ought to know how to cook, maintain a house, pay bills, sort out a morgage, pension funds etc ... I don't even know how to open a bank account. Is this just me or is this a mutual feeling?

In my organisation we work with schools to view life skills as part of the basics of education. We promote this in developing countries.
Is it primarily parents' responsibility? Yes. But nothing wrong with schools reinforcing, particularly since some parents didn't learn life skills themselves.

School isn't supposed to teach you those skills, your parents are. That's part of the problem nowadays. Parents expect the school to teach their children everything and spend no time teaching them any of the "life skills" required.
Then we have a bunch of whining teenagers who can't cope with anything.

Yeah that's a good point, I taught my boys some practical skills including a bit of cooking and am there for them if they need any practical advice.

Wrong, they are there to teach you to conform. Think outside the box.

I would say they do the bare miniimum. Things with independence, as far as cooking, cleaning, etc..should be taught at home. Parents still have a role in a childs life.

But..I will say that schools spend so much time teaching every little not needed subject of things for ONE big standardized test that proves nothing on individual intelligence. They could and should teach more on thingd like taxes, bills, and every day things as an adult. Even classes on how insurances work even. That would help a lot. Sexual health should be taught more, and not abstinence. But everything else should be taught at home by the parent.

Yeah I agree my parents did teach me life skills but some parents haven't got the time and stuff ..shouldnt it fall on teachers to at least install some basics instead of math an stuff

School does not teach you how to be independent. That you have to learn on your own.

It's not the schools job to teach you life skills. That is your parents job...or yours. Everything comes with an instruction manual. Read it...learn how to do it if your parents won't teach you. You can't expect your school to teach you how to be a responsible adult....that's your job. I get tired of schools getting blamed for everything. Take the initiative to learn things on your own...

As to schools teaching, well, you already learned the basic of RRR. Schools do teach basic survival skills like music, sports, automotive repairs, office automation, or cooking, at least when I went to school. These days school are fighting for every dime to stay open, and our government want to cut more money.

Schools can't teach you everything you need to know about living and surviving in this world. You could suggest some new topics, but the school day is only so accommodating. Alot of what you learn in life can't be taught in textbooks.

The primary thing taught by schools is blind obedience to authority. The "subjects" are only there to divert the mind while the lessons in obedience are being taught and practiced and practiced and practiced.

When I first went to school back in the 1950s, all the soon to be married young women (grades 7 1nd 8) learned cooking, sewing, and house keeping. Feminist changed all that in the 1960s. Schools are no longer allowed to teach young women how to be SAHMs. Schools are now obligated to push young women into being faux men, chasing a man's education and career. Its a total FAIL for the schools and for young women.

I think that was a little harsh. I wasn't saying that girls should be taught math an science and girls be taught cleaning.we are in the 21st century and we are not following hitlers kinder kutcher kirker regime with his Hitler youths we know from history how badly that went.
