I'm 36, and I used to do it a lot more when I was younger than I do now. Sometimes I can go months without cutting. I've also developed a support system with my family and friends, so that when I get that overwhelming urge to cut I can call on them day or night, and they help me get through it. I'm not perfect though, and sometimes I do fail and end up cutting. The hardest part is when my son asks me what happened if he sees the cut, then I have to make something up. So for him, and for myself, I try really hard to keep control of myself. As of today It's been over six months since I cut or did anything else to hurt myself.

Hard to answer, I have thought that I quit cutting and hurting myself in other ways, but I really haven't atleast once or twice a year I can't handle it and I hurt myself. It is a long journey.

self harm is like an addiction or a familiar disease. ive been bateling against it for 6 years now, and there are times when i do it more than 3 times a day and sometimes i can be 2 months without it. we`re all doomed when the skin starts feeling like crawling

i think we do start slowing down. i have. but i still have the want to ... want to hurt myself. i want to because it is a habit and because i am punishing myself. are you punishing yourself? i do because i feel so egotistical thinking anyone else even cares if it do it or not

All I know is that self harming is a symptom of serious mental illness thet must be addressed and dealt with. Nobody deserves to live that way.

i haven't in over 10 years, but it still crosses my mind from time to time. But I know that doesn't work for me anymore.

Same with drugs and alcohol. I know I can't drink, cut, smoke or pill pop my way out of my problems. I wasn't dealing with those difficulties when I did those things, just numbing myself. But the pain came back and has to be dealt with constructively, which is why I am in therapy now.

I feel proud of myself now that, while on my dark days i am tempted, I feel I have overcome that need. I hope the same happens for you, and soon.

i hope all those that harm themselves who have posted here can find their way through those dark places and realize that you are all better than that, you deserve better than that.

"Self-harmers" are very often affected by borderline personality disorder. Those with BPD do have a reputation for "burning out," especially in midlife. You vent and vent and vent and eventually you get a lot of the **** out of you,--if you don't f*ck up and kill yourself by accident.

Folks with BPD have WAY more control over their impulses than they usually understand or will admit even after they do understand it. Cutting (burning, etc) is a cop out for facing reality. Get over it. Grow up. Start dealing with the real world.

I did.
