Do some of the roads today derive from foot paths of the last few centuries?

Probably the bigger roads and main roads that led from county to county, the smaller ones most likely branched off of the bigger ones throughout time. Walking, Horse carriages, first vehicles, today's vehicles...? idk just a thought.......

No question about it, that's how most of todays roads were started. I use to live on a two lane black-top that ran 150 miles between St. Louis and several smaller towns to the south. That road was once the pony express route.

In many parts of the world, the paths go back centuries, so the roads are less than optimal.

Where I live, some of the roads are right on top of the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail.
