I think there is some validity to that. I also believe that insecurity stems from making remarks that are pretended to be funny but may have misplaced intent.

I think the jokes show more of a persons personality. There may be or may not be truth in the joke. But the personality show through.

Yes, definitely. Kinda like "There is truth in wine, people tend to be more honest if they feel there aren't as many consequences.
