at my office, when they had to lay off staff, they kept the trainees and probationers, and cut the people with 30 years of experience

I was asked to be part of a hiring team, once for a software company. Some old, some young, some middle aged people came in. We hired a 46 year old, a 23 year old, and a 22 year old. It was entirely skill-based hiring. The 46 year old was a very good catch: he had been doing IT since the 80s, and he really knew his stuff. the other two guys were recent college graduates who passed our tests. And these three had more or less the same job. Although I the older guy got slightly higher pay

Prejudice of most kinds are alive and well in most work places and hiring practices because the are present in the population.

Yup. For example--just how many grey-haired pole dancers have you seen?

In most places, yes. Even if you're very experienced, they'll use the old standby of your being overqualified.
