Both:
I can choose how to love my parents, but I cannot choose them.
I can choose friends, but I cannot make them to be friendly to me.
I can make a thing moving, but the thing cannot move eternally with my force.

had my fortune read when I was 16, he predicted a physical assault by a man, because of that I've always been careful around guys etc.
I was raped - could have happened to anyone in the circumstances- a series of completely random events strung together to result in the outcome- when I look back on it I am still amazed, so many little factors led to what happened,
never believed in fate before, now, not so sure.
For those skeptics who thought that I was subconsciously transmitting my fear and therefore calling it upon myself- the psychic said it would happen when i was quite young. I no longer considered myself "young" at the time, in fact I figured I was home and dry- it wasn't in my mind,
- for those of you who think I was careless because I figured I was home and dry- a life time of cautious habits do not evaporate overnight.
make of this what you will.

I have been taught that fate is wrong that we have free will etc... and yet if we pray for guidance in our lives then we tend to attribute success to God so was that fate?

Did god have any control over matters that we were successful in and prayed about? if so then was our free will changed from the point we prayed? or before? ie did we have free will..

I also have no answer to this as to believe in fate means god did not give us the right to choose and therefore the world is as it is today because he willed it...

If I believe that we are totally in control then prayer about our decisions in life is useless and in fact counter productive...

I tend to think that somewhere in between there is another explanation, that we choose our paths in life but god has the power to move these paths and may or may not do so..

confused? yea I am, lol

unhinged, you are confused because you believe in a God! Take your God out of the equation and life becomes so much simpler! Having free will means you can believe or not believe in a God, but if you choose to believe, you lose your free will! It's your choice :o)

I think we are submitted to various determinisms, biological, sociocultural, historical, environmental. It takes a life to overcome some of them.
When we're lucky enough to have been given enough care and attention, we feel freer to make our own way through life, thus making our own history.
Still, I believe the history we're making is not entirely ours. Somehow, it was dictated by the history, frustrations, desires, of other people, our elders, our society. Often kids realise the dreams of their parents without even being aware of it (that dream might be one of self-destruction).

the greek word fate - did not mean - your entire life was controlled - but it meant a 'part'.

to me fate is your position in life - and destiny is your highest potential - the rest. . .

I've never heard the term 'humanistic approach' before - where does it come from?
