Resolved Question

Do you believe baptism is a contract with God? Do you believe a marriage is a contract to your spouse?

When I was baptised - I took my vow to our Heavenly Father seriously. It is a binding contract between Him and I to uphold the commandments.

Do you feel that marriage is a binding contract as well? To have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part?

yes and yes. unfortunately humans, being human, often make choices to further fulfill their own selfish desires, with the knowledge that God, my spouse, my colleagues and/or political constituates will forgive me. with forgiveness being a mandate, there's no need for personal accountability.

No. There are no gods.
No. It's a contract between yourself, your spouse, and the state. However binding you feel the contract is between you and your spouse, the contract consists of 3 parties, and the state can withdraw from the contract at any time, nullifying the contract.
That is a more legalistic and pedantic interpretation than you expected, I am guessing, and the state doesn't act like that very often!
In the narrow sense of spousal contract, yes, I believe it should be binding - but a cursory glance at the statistics reveal it isn't.
(I just thought that you may be Merkin. To avoid confusion, state in this comment is used in it's political science meaning of government, rather than S in USA.)

Baptism is a symbol to me. It symbolizes the end of a former life and the start of a new one, with God in it.

If you see baptizing as a contract to change, then you're actually trying to commit your old self in a new way.

You need to let everything that defines you as individual go, nothing you've accomplished, learned or experienced is good enough as it roots in this earth. Baptizing means becoming a citizen of the kingdom of God and making everything that is you different and holy.

I'm not a preacher, but this is my religion.

I think It would be a good way to see both of these things. I havent been baptised so I am not really getting the whole god thing but It would probably help.
As for marriage, I think that seeing it more as a contract would make it be more serious and withstanding. -What with all the divorces that are now so much a part of life as marriage!

"Contract" is a desire to control someone put in words with an optional clauses describing means of punishment in case of loss of control.
It is an invention of institutions of society. It has nothing to do with God.
God Loves. God neither invented not write contracts.

Human are busy with writing contracts and then breaking them anyways.
