I still love my ex but I have a pure hatred for the way he has acted. I don't believe you can totally kill love.

There is a very fine line between love and hate

Love and hatred are both passions (strong emotions that you may have little control over.) I think it could be very easy for an intensely emotional and proud person to have their formerly passionate love transformed into passionate hatred under the "proper" circumstances.

Yes, it is the only way to let them go.

I think that the two emotions are so closely related that it's almost impossible to love someone completely without hating them a little bit. It's completely possible for the two to reverse their roles, but I don't think one emotion can turn into another.

They are at opposite ends of the spectrum, but sure, anything is possible.

Unfortunately, musicman99, it all too often seems to do just that. A glance at the divorce statistics in western countries will show that a fairly constant 40% of marriages fail to last the distance. If we presume that it was love that led them to marry, and that a large proportion of divorces are acrimonious and spite-filled, then the case that love can lead to hate is clearly proven.
Our adversarial systems of family law do little to lessen the likelihood of hatred blooming where love has withered.
An end to the love doesn't *have* to lead to hatred, though. My wife and I are still married but haven't lived together for ten years; and we seem to get on better now than we ever did.
