No. They were released as 'just a game' - it's not like there was some ancient mystical practice that was then marketed. People just went "hey, this will be a fun idea" and mass produced a board game. It was never intended to be anything more than silly fun.

Well, it's based on planchette writing, automated writing, ect that existed far before the Ouija board was ever mass marketed :) and those were not considered a novelty when they were invented. People really believed in that stuff long ago. It's a novelty now (for most folks) because of our understanding of the natural world and how things work.
