Part of the atheist/theist debate is that everything can be explained via science. Contrary to current cultural belief, science is not dismissed in most mainstream religions. Really, it's a matter of some religions being willing to take into account that there is another "energy" motivating things in the universe.<br />
<br />
If our existence is solely by chance, our actions are driven strictly by chemicals, and survival of the fittest is the rule - then love and compassion (especially for those outside of our immediate family) in an atheist world make no sense.
