I got PTSD after a trauma episode and spent a year drinking it all away because I was so shocked and upset. Now I am a little better I seem ready to not want to numb myself so much and am slowly seeing life a tiny bit rather than hiding behind the haze of drink that helped me cope. I think the technical term is self medicating. When you drink to numb or because you can't face things it is trying to cope with feelings you find to much. The problem is the more you do the less ability you have to cope and the more you want.

I guess it depends what happened to make you drink...sometimes it can take the edge off and sometimes it can make everything seem a whole lot worse. Sometimes it's like maybe it is all to much to take...but if you are nice to you and don't beat yourself up and give yourself time you can face whatever happened without it...but make sure you at least learn about the reasons why you do it...the answers to the problems don't come through it but it can give you time to adjust to the shock sometimes.....

Yes, all the time. I drink to keep my brain quiet, then the tiredness and hangover usually keep the thoughts subdued until I can start drinking again...

No, I don't....I try to deal with whatever is bothering me, instead of resorting to substances of any kind.

People drink, to drown their troubles....the problem is....troubles, can swim.

Yes I drink to forget my problems or if i'm stressed out. If i'm going out I don't feel confident or capable of having a good time without alcohol.

It helps for the time you're drunk but when you sober up everythings still there and you've probably embarassed yourself some more.

I need to reach a permanently drunken state forever then i'll be all set up for life lol!

I have a drink now and then to relax but I've learned better than to try and use it for anything else. That usually just makes me sick.

No. I drink to be social, and cos I enjoy it. Not often, but when I do... If you drink when you're down, I think it only makes you feel worse. Have a hug, instead. X

No, I have "security issues" and I never wanted to anesthetize myself to the point of inattention. I find other ways to still my mind.
However because I'm reserved I will have a couple of drinks in a social setting. It lowers my intensity and allows me to interact more freely.
I'm a happy drinker and a little bit of a buzz makes me more approachable.

Drink actualy makes it even worse.
You drink to forget your problems, your problems remain where they are, so you drink more to forget them, when your sober you still have the same problem so you drink more untill the problem you once had is no longer the problem but you have a new problem called cirrhosis of the liver and die

Hi humptydumpty85
i do not drink regularly but every now and again a good drunk resets me back to factory settings which helps at the time and then onwards to get on with life. Is that wrong? Probably but I always think there a lot worse things. Pretty tame really!

No - never used alcohol for this purpose. But my father was alcaholic, kinda made me wary.

Yes, at least used to a lot. Vodka mostly.
Then i changed the way I approach inner feelings - and it is changing me from inside - eliminating the need for substances.
It's very cool feeling when you growing up :)

I only ever drank to relax and loosen up a bit. Never was the kind to get drunk, but then alcoholism runs in my family. So when I lost my husband, I sort of gave up the habit out of fear.

I used to do that a lot, which I should have sought help for for. Did it help? Long-term no, the opposite, Now its only a glass of wine with a meal. But its the good stuff!

I drink once in awhile just to quiet down the voices in my head for a little while. It only helps for a short time. At my age, it really just makes me sleepy and makes it hard to get up in the morning, so I don't drink much nor do I drink very often.

I give myself permision to drink at home near bedtime. it does make it easier for me to wind down from work and get ready to sleep at an odd time of day. Unfortunately, it also makes me too honest with other people, so I try to wait til I am alone1

If you drink to relax most of the time you will relax!! If you drink to ease a problem, two things occur you get drunk and you still have a problem, Face your problems first then get drunk and then you didnt waste your money!!!!!
