Well yes I agree, sometimes people may say lol, if they have nothing else to say. Or when someone says something meaning to be funny, you have no choice but to say lol to be fair

No, and I find it stupid, lol can be used 2 ways without sounding overly obnoxious, 1) to break an awkward silence or to respond to something that you can't think of a suitable response to (IM). 2) when you actually find something funny (also in an IM). I just get pissed off when people do it.
