It depends on the vibe I get from the person. There are a lot of "professional" homeless people asking for handouts in my neighborhood. It's their job. They dress down, camp out on the street and ask for money. At the end of the day they go home to a nice apartment and count their loot. I never give them a dime. I only give to people who seem legit. I have a good sixth sense for picking who really needs it.

When I lived in Fl there was a lady infamous for doing that. She let a crazy spider bite fester and would walk around with it exposed, using the same lines. That wound looked horrible each time, it couldn't ave been healthy. She had a pretty decent car and house but claimed to be destitute.

There's an old black man who lives two doors down from me. In his sixties. He collects social security. Has a nice house, nice car, big screen tv. He doesn't bathe and raids the Catholic Charities clothes donation boxes for what he calls "work clothes". Every morning he dresses down, grabs his cardboard sign and takes the bus across town to the big shopping malls and panhandles. He bragged to me once "I only make $840 a month on SSI, but I can make twice that in a good month doing this." and patted his "Please help" sign.

Usually no, I have given them my coat before and food.. but never give them money; don't know which of them could be addicts and that money could be feeding their addiction.

Mmhmm. Was visiting a friend in another state and saw a homeless man without a coat; it was freezing out so I gave him my coat. Didn't fit him too well, but was better then nothing I suppose.

Yes. For a short while I was homeless, so I understand that it could happen to anyone. People usually don't because they are too worried about what a homeless person would do with the money, but i'm satisfied in knowing that I am helping.

A homeless guy paid for my coffee once. Store was cash only and all I had was a card. He was a perfect gentleman and insisted. He told me to just 'catch' him back sometime. I always look for him but haven't seen him again!

It's awesome when something that makes me feel like I don't need to be cynical about everything all the time. The experience you had with that homeless man is a perfect example of how people are always capable of surprising you
