I'm guessing that you are referring to life in the privileged circles of the Regency period - life for the huddled masses,the overwhelming majority,was hard and rough to a degree unimaginable now,200 years later.
Not really, all the etiquette, chivalry, etc. were simply means to enslave petty servants to the powerful, the more rigid the ritual the more insecure the leader's position. I prefer informality, as it reflects confidence.
XVIIIth Century was actually hidious, but I feel strangly affiliated with it, thou not likeing it.
