Do you feel that you haven't truly grown up?

At twenty one (22 in May), I often feel as though I haven't matured mentally like everyone else around me. I feel overly emotional and rather naive, even compared to my younger friends.

Are there times where you think the same way and you wonder if there could be something wrong with you?

Do you think this is something worth talking to my doctor about, or is it all in my head?

I think everyone is thinking you are thinking about a 'I never want to grow up' kind of thing, but it sounds to me like you are concerned about being developmentally not growing up at the right pace. You should never worry about this kind of thing- ever or you are being extremely narrow minded and could do yourself harm. You have to let yourself be who you are.

The people who really haven't grown up are people who have chosen a life of criminal thinking and/or taking advantage of others, people who just accept whatever people say is acceptable around them without even thinking about it or who are unable to properly think about it (ie people who choose abortion instead of accepting responsibility for their own actions, people who still think about how to bend the rules or get around them instead of obey them, people who get ahead by hurting others, or by cheating, people who think comitting adultery is cool, people who model their lives after sitcom characters or see hollywood stars as role models)- there is an endless list of people who have not and probably are incapable of growing up. But if you are a moral person who understands that life is about caring for and responsible for yourself, family and society then you have grown up and everything else about your life will unfold in the time it should.

I always felt that I grew up before I should have.

Yes I'm older than you and I feel the same way.

Maybe it is something from our childhood that makes us this way.

Personally I've always thought that it is how I am made out to be. This has, in so many ways, proved to be a disadvantage but I can't see how I can be otherwise.

Talking to a counsellor might help you to find out more about yourself. I've never tried it before but I know of people who did and and claimed that it's good for them.

Every moment I face a hard choice, everytime i face the world without a mask and every moment when I am called upoun. I think I will always be a child in a sense, both in good and bad ways.

At the age of 26 going on 27 in a couple of months, I have a permenant case of Peter Pan syndrome. I think it stems from the fact that I long for the past since I had a wonderful childhood and teen years and adulthood just hasn't been as wonderful. I think we all grow out of this in our own time and it doesnt mean there is anything wrong with you. Some of us just progress slower than others just wait for time to take its course.

I think I know how you feel dizzaster. I've had similar thoughts about myself. I feel like I'm always behind. But just as deftone says, we are all our own person. You can never properly compare yourself to another. You must only measure yourself to yourself. So long as you see progress and growth within yourself, it's all that matters. :)

If you ever feel that you're done growing, then you need to do some more soul-searching. There is always room and opportunity for further growth. Even people that think they are as "adult" as they can get have growing to do.

Mentally, i feel grown up.
However, i still am living with my parents, and i haven't graduated uni yet. So i probably won't feel truly "grown up" until then which will be the end of 2010 and i'll be 22.

Growth=Life, if you weren't growing up in at least some small way, whether or not you realise it, you wouldn't still be around. without growth in any increment, no matter how small, I think we would cease to be...I know I'll be growing untill the day I die :)

Definitely. Emotionally, in a lot of ways, it's as if I'm stunted at twelve.
