Do you have a long term illness, if so, how are your family and friends dealing with you?

I was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, I survived; sepsis in 2003, I survived; various things seen in CT scans & MRI's since 2003; received neuropathy diagnosis in 2004, I'm thriving; mass on my brain and steroid psychosis earlier this year, still I thrive. However, since taking a look at myself and my life since the steroid psychosis hit and screwed up my emotions, the one thing that I've come to realize is that both my famly and friends can't handle being around me anymore because I've been going through this for so long now....heck I don't like telling them what's going on with me when they ask because I don't like seeing that "just die already" look in their eyes and that "just let go already" tone in their voice (those that I talk to over the phone)!

I have a terminal illness and I am completely on my own. I have learned to be my own support and not depend on any other human being for anything. I can't be hurt or feel rejected or that no one cares if I don't put that demand on them. Sometimes it's best to deal with your problems on your own. It makes you stronger and definitely independent. I wish us both well.

They don't act like they even know about it. They just ignore it.

This past July, I was diagnosed with cancer (melanoma). I had surgery in mid-August and had my first radiation treatment today. I have been surrounded by friends and my brother has more or less come out of the woodwork and is sticking to me like glue. I am, indeed, fortunate. Because of the size of the melanoma on my scalp, statistics show that I'll probably be dead within 10 years -- only 35% survivability. Regardless, I'm positive and am grateful for what I have in terms of support.

I was in an accident when I was 15 and ended up with major retrograde amnesia and minor anterograde amnesia. This means that I can't remember anything before the accident and I have a difficult time making new memories. Over the years I've learned to cope with it, although, sadly, I lost a great many friends due to the fact that some people seem to think that amnesia only happens in the movies, and decided I was a liar. But I've made peace with that too.
