Do you have a teenager that will do the oppositte of what he/she thinks you want just to disagree?

I have a 19 year old son that still goes out of his way to think out what we(his parents) would want or think just to do the oppositte. Example, one year he said, " I really want to cut my hair but I know you two would like that so I'm not going to". Therefore he makes bad choices just to feel like he's his own person, seems ridiculous to me.

21stCenturySchizo idMan	Posted Sep 15th, 2009 at 2:57PM Well, this is a very odd phenomenon, usually teenagers are all about avoiding their friends and trying to hang out with their parents. The one thing that they love to do is show everyone what good, upright, and outstanding citizens they are. I bet he'll soon ask if you will go to the mall with him so that everyone will see him with his mom. Rated: +3Vote for this!

You should tell him all the differences between you that are already there and that he doesn't have to try so hard to not be like you, as he already and always has had his own personality different than yours. Literaturegirl	Posted Sep 15th, 2009 at 3:18PM Well, although rather a long time ago...I remember how painful it could be being a teenager and having the adults around me insisting that I deliberately set out to do the opposite of what they wanted, just to be spiteful. Your son seems to be battling for a sense of himself as independent from you. Could family therapy help/be possible? Rated: +1Vote for this!
