That's funny. I have one too. No one ever refers to it as a vernal pond. There's about 3 acres of grass that grows every year by the wetland and "vernal" pond that get's up to 4-1/2 ft. long. The pond fills as a result of the rising and lowering water table over the course of the year. There's a cycle involved and I've never noticed it change.

Every year the spring peepers create such a racket at night I think the decibel level would be close to 120db but being about 1000 yards from it, it's great to fall asleep to.

Well, I don't know about the Romans/Greek thing, but, vernal pools fill up with water in spring and last through part of the summer. That's where a lot of dragonflies, salamanders, frogs, fairy shrimp, and many insects are born, and then move on to the woods.

Vernal pools are very important to the ecosystem. I am proud to have about a dozen in my woods.
