Do you know any middle aged people who can't keep the weight down like a 20-year-old, so they become fitness freaks?

I am that man. It is severely annoying that ten pushups and a jog around the block no longer do the trick.

Here. It sucks. I was small growing up. Didn't reach 100lbs until I was about 14. Got to 130 by 18 and stayed there eating as much as I wanted, whatever I wanted and never gained another pound. Then I hit 30 years old and the weight piled on. Before I knew it I was over 200 pounds. I was shocked to discover the fat guy in the picture was me. Went on a diet, started exercising like a mad man and lost some of it. Still hover right around 160.

If you altered the specific weights just a bit, you would be telling my story. Just a little trip down Nostalgia Lane -- wasn't it great to be able to eat any and everything back in the day?

When I was younger, my weight was stable, as long as I exercised. Now I have to watch what I eat, and exercise. As long as my diet is clean, it gives me a little leeway with exercise, though.
I'd suggest monitoring your diet and cutting out processed foods and sugar.

Metabolism slows drastically in the 40's and 50's for some and continues. I'm not a fitness freak. I exercise because it makes me feel better. Same reason why I sing. Or play my guitar. Or drink wine. Looking good is an added bonus.

My best friend. Started running marathons and "training" all the time. Hasn't made a difference because her daily habits haven't changed.

Exercise hardly does anything to affect your weight, unless you do something for hours you'll probably just get hungry afterwards, eat a sandwich and cancel it out. It's nearly all about diet and whether you eat more calories than you need.

And how many calories you need is dependent on the tissues you possess. Since muscle and bone masses naturally decline over a lifetime, the only way you have to keep them up or increase them is to exercise.

Jogging wouldn't do much to build up muscle though, would it?
