Do you know anyone who suffers from Diverticulitis? How do they cope with it?

* Diverticular disease. If the diverticula cause symptoms, the condition is known as diverticular disease.
* Diverticulitis. If diverticula get inflamed and cause an illness, the condition is known as diverticulitis.

Symptoms

The symptoms of diverticular disease are usually abdominal pain, bloating or wind. You may also have constipation and feel that you are not able to completely empty your bowels when you open them.

Diverticulitis can come as mild attacks of discomfort, or as a more serious illness needing hospital treatment. Symptoms include:

* feeling generally unwell
* fever
* changes in bowel habit
* pain in the lower left side of your abdomen

You may find that pain and disturbed bowel function come back from time to time. You won't usually need to go into hospital if you have these mild symptoms, without a high temperature or severe pain.

    My wife has a mild case of it and she tries to stick with soft foods and stays away from corn, anything with nuts, and popcorn.

    My grandmother had it - I didn't do too much research on it - I just know she avoided anything with seeds, "snacking" seeds and nuts. Basically anything that could stick in "pockets" in the abdominal wall and cause pain.

    My mother gets it, and so she tries to stay away from any foods which might "catch" inside her: nuts, seeds, corn. She also swears by aloe vera juice to help ease the inflammation. You can get it at most health food stores.

    However, she was told that the only treatment for chronic diverticulitis is surgery. She's still hoping that she won't have to go down that route - but it doesn't tend to get better with age, only worse. Sorry.

    I have MS, and I can relate to your illness. I will pray you get better. God Bless you ~ hang in there!
    I cope with my illness by keeping my faith. I've come a long way. From bed 24/7 to hiking!!!
