Rude? I would think ma'am is a lot less rude than, "yo *****!"

If anything, ma'am is a sign of respect, no?

I'm 12 and I say it as a sign of respect, but most don't take it that way since I live in Chicago. I should move to Alabama. More respect.

"Hey Rude, don't call me Dude!" was the original name for the Beatles classic "Hey Jude" Thankfully they changed it.

What I feel is rude and unprofessional is being addressed as; babe, honey, sweetie, etc. I make eye contact with that person and calmly ask them not to address me in that manner.

Well I haven't been adresses as that, since I'm young. But if someone says it, it's not meant to be rude. It's just a Southern thing. Fo people who live in other areas of the US, they have different ways of addressing someone. Where I was came from, we would say Mrs. or Ms. when addressing someone formally.

I understand that it's meant as respect, but with women, "ma'am" also implies age, where "sir" can be pretty neutral.
