I think that having a purpose greater than the satisfaction of one's own needs and desires is important if one wants to look back on one's life with some measure of pride. Helping others with no greater motivation than being able to do good for another human being is one of the best ways of feeling one's life is of value.
If I didn't have a purpose to be here, then I wouln't be here; I would cease to exist. I assume that when my purpose in life is finished, then I will be no more. I have a value because I have family that I helped create, how can I not have value when I created lives? I have a purpose and I have the incentive, it's finding contentment within the incentive what matters.
