I do not require my kids to call ME sir or ma'am. They address their friends parents by saying Mr. and Mrs.-using their last names. My kids are VERY respectful to other adults, they have always been respectful. I don't think anyone can generalize and say if kids lack this revered sentiments with their parents it's going to be difficult for them to respect other adults. I think parents need to teach their kids to respect adults and be polite, but they can teach this without making them say sir or ma'am.
We have family that live in the south and yes it is very common there and I respect that... but I don't feel it has to be that way or kids will be disrespectful.

NO!...Mum or Dad will do!.....But their friends are different!

Instead of first names, a little respect would be nice!

Being Australian, it is not common to hear children use those term anyway. Mum/dad is what they call us, and others mr/mrs/miss whoever....that is how we get them to show respect to everyone.

Yes, my oldest says yes ma'am and yes sir, I think a child must learn at the very least to respect their elders, even if they do not agree with them. I am from the south and my husband is from Nevada and he frowned at me while I was teaching our son to be respectful. He said it was wrong because he should love us not fear us. I explained to him that respect is not about fear, it IS about love for your fellow human. My child calls everyone ma'am or sir. And my grandpa has always called me ma'am, because he lolves and respects me as a person.

Even with my daughter, when I was so young, I taught her sir and ma'am.

No its not a requirement. but I do teach my children no sir yes ma'am. It's a respect thing and later in life a business skill. I was never taught it, and it held me back in diffrent jobs, slang is fun, but unprofessional in an office or work place, so I am teaching my kids.

Parents should teach children to love and respect them from childhood. Lacking of these revered sentiments and behaviors is injurious for their lives. Because, a civilized and healthy world is the world of mutual love and mutual respect; if the children could not do this with their parents, it would be more difficult for them in doing it for others, hence it becomes hard for them to consort with people in the wide society.

No way... One because they are just learning to talk, two because me and my husband think what ever they learn to say, wether it be "mommy and daddy" or mama and dada" etc.. thats what we are to them. not sir and not ma'am. Ik its polite just not a required thing in our house
