My DVR earns its keep. Most everything I want to see comes on either when I'm asleep or at work.

Occasionally I watch live TV, but I like dvds...except for a handful of shows I don't watch much TV at all anymore.

live today - I never record anything... although sometimes I'll search "on demand" for something I missed and wanted to see

I record one sporting event and watch another live.I flip back n forth skipping commercials till I get to the Superbowl,then I watch the commercials.
