It would be if he was forced to serve his time at that Arizona jail where the sheriff makes the prisoners wear pink, and makes them pay for sandwich condiments.

I'm not from the USA, but I still heard of it. Biggest scam ever.

I thought he got off easy. Pity he won't live to serve his time.

some people committed suicide once they realized their life savings were gone . . so YES it's justified. They should investigate his sons also . . .

I think he needs to donate non-critical body parts. Spending time in some federal club house isn't payment.

it's as justified as it can be. I mean, what else can they really do to him? Sadly, Camp Cupcake is probably going to take wonderful care of him for the rest of his life.

Here's how it is: Mr. Madoff ... MADE OFF ... with Billions ... that's BILLIONS with a "B" of people's money, retirement money, charities' money that was entrusted to him to invest wisely ... which he DIDN'T. In response, the Federal Government decides it's time to demonstrate that this brand of white-collar crime is NOT tolerable ... and lays the max on him.

I have ZERO problem being down with that!

I don't think he minds what kind of sentence they gave him. He made sure to protect his own family's finances from being siezed by the gov't. So many watched suffering in their families due to his actions. Yet his family will continue to live the same "comfortable" lifestyle as before. Justice would be taking his family's wealth & distributing it among the families he victimized and putting him out on the street to fend for himself. Rant over.

I read somewhere that his lawyer asked the jury not to be swayed by the public anger.

Right. So after you stole everyone's retirement fund now the law should try to disregard those people and understand why you did what you did?

I think 150 years is justified although I'd prefer it if they ask him to work his butt off and return every cent.

They should make him work as a consultant for 30,000 a year on work release. Put that evil mind to work to find like minded criminals. Then invite everyone he defrauded in for a visit one on one.

The length of the term was intended to send a message. Madoff certainly won't live long enough to serve the time.. the same result would be accomplished by sentencing him to ~30 yrs. He'll die in prison.

The sentence was just but the problem remains. The fact is that scammers can only be successful if there are people around looking to make an easy buck or get something for nothing.

Yes, he got off easy. Hopefully he'll also have to put in some hard labor too!

i just wonder why there are murderers and child molesters (and NO i don't mean michael jackson) who are out and about in just a few years or end up doing no time at all. and i kind of think that bernie's victims should have thought twice about giving up their loot. but... he took a chance and got caught. that's it.

from the USA... he should have to do hard labor and till the day he dies, every day without a minutes rest. even in a max security US prison he will have better quality of life then most of the people he ripped off... and his assets - regardless if his wife knew about the ponzi or not they should all be taken - every last thing. i don't buy for one minute she was unaware of her husbands actions. deplorarble!!!

I would like to see that sentence split between Bernie and the gentlemen who were on the SEC's Oversight Committee who "supposedly" investigated Bernie back in 2006.
I don't know exactly how many sat (and I do mean "sat") on this committee but they had to know the truth about this scam or be a part of this scam. Lets see....150 divided by 5 members plus Bernie = 25 years each. Still not enough time.....Okay Obama....what now?

What about the officers from Fairfield Greenwich....I have not heard a peep about them.

Also what about that courageous man, Mr. Markopolos the risk and danger he endured just attempting to bring Bernie Madoff's scam to the authorities? This man knew this was a huge conspiracy.....and yet had the guts to go forward to try to expose it. This is the man who should be operating the SEC.

-----------
On Jan. 4, 2006, the SEC's enforcement staff in New York opened an investigation, based on Mr. Markopolos's allegations, into whether Mr. Madoff was, in fact, running a Ponzi scheme. The SEC staff received documents from Mr. Madoff and Fairfield Greenwich, a hedge fund that placed money with Mr. Madoff on behalf of its clients. The SEC also interviewed Mr. Madoff, his assistant, an official from Fairfield Greenwich and another employee. The SEC report said that neither Mr. Madoff nor the Fairfield funds disclosed to investors in the Fairfield funds that Mr. Madoff was the investment adviser. Lawyer from Fairfield could not be reached for comment.

Kind of overkill, but I think they're making the statement that this guy NEVER gets to be free again.

It may seem harsh, but he destroyed a lot of people's retirement dreams. His greedy wife should get some punishment, too. He was putting $$ in her accounts to try to hide it.
