Do you think America should get rid of States and be one country?
I have been wondering, since our government is way too big, maybe we should eliminate each state and just be one big country - or - maybe each state should be just one country. Do you think this would work to solve the economic crisis here?

NO if you think the federal government is too big and overreaching now that would only make the problem bigger by several orders of magnitude. Consolidating power in one area or agency or person is always a very bad idea.

get rid of California and New York then we might be better off(add florida also)
Let's sell California to Mexico, Florida to Cuba and New York to who ever wants it(cheap)

I would not like the US to look like the California I live in today (holds nose and says Pee-U!)...it stinks! The states system serves locally knowing that those in DC cannot look after everyone's interests. States system like Counties help to serve better.

No. The way our Original US Constitution had it ....will always be the best way. Have an emasculated Federal Government with only 1% of all governmental power (enumerated powers) ....with the remaining 99% of all governing power residing within the individual respective States.
This way, each State would be competing for citizens to reside within its border ("voting with your feet"). If you don't like how your State is handling things ...."move".

No. there are too many states who are getting right, like Texas and Arizona, and getting wrong like California and New York. The sovereignty of states (10th amendment) is vital to American freedom.

The U.S.A. is one big country. How would getting rid of states make it any better. If you think the federal government has too much power now, consider how bad it would be if there were no controls from the individual states giving their input on how their citizens want things done. If you eliminate states, then eventually someone would come up with the bright idea of eliminating cities and towns, and then the head of the country would be all powerful. No one to say *NO*. You think they have big egos now. There'd be no hat in the world that would fit the head of the president of such a country. Like a kid who owns the sand box; with nobody to exercise any control over what he says.

The idea of states in a republic is meant to give the majority of power and authority into as many hands as possible while limiting power and authority from a centralized government. This is a reality that has failed....the federal government has all but assumed all power over the 50 states.

No. Our government can work, the problems are complacency of the people, and corruption and greed on the part of the government. On a practical level, some things are best left in local hands.

No. That would make the government even bigger and more out of touch. This way, each region is more able to have its own needs met and issues addressed.

No, I would think that may make things worse if that happened since each state has its own set of laws (talk about ideas clashing in DC-it would be a disaster)
