I've seen depression and extreme distress in baby animals when they are suddenly without a parent. Their need seems to be both instinctive and emotional. Of course, those are the ones that aren't meant to become independent immediately. In primates, offspring can become withdrawn and depressed when a mother dies, even if the young are full grown. I once saw a documentary where a female chimp was killed, and her son, though an adult, became withdrawn and refused to eat. He too died soon after. The documentary asserted that probably cause was a broken heart. The bonds are that strong.
