Dreams are: OK, this will not be as articulate as I'd wish, but, when we are awake, we have feelings that we do not allow ourselves to experience. Like, if we see a spider, for example, we might just be like, "Oh, yuck, I hate spiders", and then go on with our day. But, when we sleep, and have no control over what we experience, then the spider will become fifty feet tall with hundreds of flashing, evil eyes and big teeth dripping with blood, and it chases us and tries to catch us by shooting web-strings at us, and we are terrified and running for our lives... THAT is how we feel about spiders.
The real feelings can't come out when we're awake, so they come out when we're asleep, along with appropriate imagery. It's like the feelings are kept in a warehouse until we sleep, and then we experience them without our usual conscious controls and filters.
If you really look at your dreams, you can always find that each element is from something that happened in your waking life recently, or maybe not recently, but it's always from our waking life. If it's not, in rare cases, then it's more like a dream-message telling us something very important from our higher self. But usually it's the former (but that doesn't mean our feelings that come out in dreams are not important, because they are so important that they have to come out later when we aren't in control!).

I do think that they have meanings of some kind and especially if you're not someone who can control your dreams like a lucid dreamer. Sometimes the meanings are super straight forward, like dreaming your going to be late for something the next day.
