If a teacher is focusing their classroom time on only teaching whatever material is on a standard gov. test, they may overlook other aspects of school material that should be taught. They force these test on students because they don't trust instructors. But I wonder if they do more harm than help. Look at the children... people always talk about how young adults, teens, and children, especially here in America, are unable to critically think through problems or implement what they learn. They're only being taught how to pass a silly standardized test. But that's just my opinion.

my mother works for a school district so we have debated this issue at length. my stance on it is i think the tests are not the only or best method to check the competency or intelligence of a student because people have different ways of learning. there are children who have never really been great at test taking so they do poorly despite having high intelligence. i think the academic system could try to think of newer ways to educate the children of the 21st century. i mean, we are using the same old industrial-age standard of learning in an information-age. with time comes change & new technology. i think it would be advantageous if they came up with a system that compliments the one currently in place to give students more options to excel.

No, it is to assess individual competency. That's how Bush kept sliding through! The school gets more allocation of funds according to their ranking in the state's average testing scores. Coaching/teaching/schooling children on competency tests completely skews the test toward inaccurate results.

I depended on the tendency for teachers to teach exactly what they were going to test on to get my high GPA all the way through college.

A few times, especially in college, some teachers taught the concept that you would need to think for yourself and develop the answer to a "new" question. I usually dropped those classes. LOL

Yes. Absolutely. Testing is absolutely necessary to judge wether someone really truely understands something.
