Do you think it's bad for someone who considers themselves to be socially conscious to listen to gangster rap?
It could seem black and white but I think very few issues are black and white. I mostly listen to more alternative hip-hop (and rock) but I have to say I do like a bit of gangster rap. I'm one of those people who doesn't really listen to lyrics much so I really never know what songs are about but I am obviously aware that by listening to an artist's music I'm supporting them and that I might not want to be supporting certain artists

I do get sick of hearing the N word or the B word. But do like some of the music. not as much as when younger..I listen to the 80's station.

I think it's a bit hypocritical and I am one of those hypocrites. I can't help myself, it just sounds good for some reason. But to my credit I did take some time away from it and listened to alternative hip hop for a while, in the end I had to return.

Very good question. I feel myself uncomfortable with the notion of supporting violent, sexist, racially retarded music. I accept some of the artists have excellent talents, but I wish they would put it to better creative use rather than lazy reliance on the n word. I also worry about the negative affect on young people.

The word "retarded" is offensive to the mentally disabled, but you seem fine with that. The "n" word is not used as a racial term in rap, obviously, since most rap artists are black, so that wouldn't make any sense. There was an interview about the topic and a rap artist said they mean it to say "friend/person", that they use the word to take back ownership away from racists who use it, putting an '-a' instead of '-er' at the end. So in rap music, the 'n' word is more slang than offensive. Plus, don't pretend that "popular" music on the radio, of any genre, does not support violence or sexist/promiscuous behaviour.Like (1)

The n word is offensive to me. Full stop. It does not matter that the artists are black, no one race can own a word. You never asked my opinion on other genres you asked about rap, so I confined my reply to that. You also fail to address the point of how it affects young people. Do you really think immature minds take a positive message from the destructive lyrics and negative Images portrayed by so many of these artists.Like (1)

seems nobody singles out death metal/satanic music. Gangsta rap provides insight into how urban youth live, such as those who live in the more dangerous parts of the Bronx, and the problems they may face in society. But don't get confused with that pop-garbage you hear on the radio because that's watered-down and sugar-coated, talent takes a back seat to profit.
