Do you think it's right to forbid smoking in public places (even open areas) , by law?

Smoking is a health issue and shouldn't be a public activity. Not only it's important to avoid passive smoking risk but it also would prevent children for witnessing a nasty habit.
On the flip side, is it fair to restrict smokers rights this much??

Is This A Good Question? (10)

I think it's a step in the right direction. Such a law doesn't restrict their rights, but their activity. I'm tired about smokers talking about being discriminated against. THEY are not banned from doing anything; one of their many activities is. They are allowed in the same restaurants and public places as anyone else; they're just not allowed to smoke there. If they choose to define their identity based on this singular unhealthy habit, that's their issue.

On the other hand, if they wish to have "smoking" venues, that should be allowed, as long as children aren't allowed inside.

Amen, sister! The important point I never hear mentioned in these debates is that smokers CHOSE to take that first puff, and despite overwhelming evidence on just how idiotic it is to smoke in this, the 21st century, CHOOSE to carry on doing it. Nobody forced them to start and nobody is responsible for their bad, smelly choice but the smoker him/herself.

Not only that, but the smokers themselves aren't banned. They're just not allowed to smoke there. It's like certain museums where you aren't allowed to eat. It doesn't mean that compulsive eaters can't enter, just that they can't EAT there.

Ask my mom how she feels about having stage 3 non-smokers lung cancer from working with a bunch of smokers? Or anyone else fighting this particular cancer or their families...

ahhhh smokers....the most persecuted group in western society today.....enclosed spaces I understand but the ban on open spaces is a step too far......what about traffic fumes, for example, aren't they a health threat too but I bet you won't want your car banned.

    FROM A NON-SELF DESTRUCTIVE....”NON SMOKER’S POINT OF VIEW”
    A SMOKER (DRUG ADDICT) HAS NO-RIGHTS !!

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO AFFECT THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF ANYONE ELSE PERIOD.
ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS THERE OWN SELF-DESTRUCTING BAD HABIT !
ITS LIKE SAYING…..ITS “ALRIGHT TO ABUSE ME WITH YOUR HABIT”.

WE NEED TO SHED THE LIGHT ONTO THE SMOKER (“DRUG ADDICT”) INTO THE PAINFUL REALITY ARISING FROM THEIR HABIT BEING PUSHED ONTO EVERYONE AROUND THEM.

NON-SMOKERS DIE BECAUSE OF THEIR BAD HABIT BEING PUSHED ON THEM !!!
OK, NOW A REALITY CHECK….WHERE ELSE IN OUR SOCIETY DO WE ALLOW A BAD HABIT TO KILL PEOPLE ??
WE NEED TO CHANGE SOCIETY'S CONSCIOUSNESS ON ALLOWING THIS BAD HABIT/ADDICTION/WEAKNESS TO AFFECT THE LIVES OF EVERYBODY AROUND THEM.
WE NEED TO NOT ALLOW THEIR SELFISH, STUPID & STUBBORN ADDICTION/HABIT TO AFFECT OURLIVES.
NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO AFFECT THE HEALTH OF SOMEONE ELSE !!

THE SURGEON GENERAL EDWARD C. COOP STATED THAT “A CIGARETTE IS NOTHING MORE THAN A VEHICLE TO INSTALL NICOTINE”, BUT SOCIETY FORGOT ABOUT AFFECTING EVERYONE AROUND THEM….WE NEED TO SHED THE LIGHT…AND SHAME THESE SMOKERS (DRUG ADDICTS) INTO THIS REALITY….AND INSIST ON THEM NOT PUSHING THEIR DRUG/BAD HABIT ONTO ALL OF US.
THEY NEED TO GET THEIR FIX FROM SMOKELESS CIGARETTE'S, PATCHES, ETC….THUS NEVER ALLOWING THEM TO PUSH THEIR BAD HABIT ONTO ALL OF US...

CAN YOU IMAGINE A DAY WHEN YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE TO SMELL THE FOWL SMELL OF CIGARETTE STENCH EVER AGAIN ??

IT IS US, THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE….(NON-SMOKER’S)…THAT FINALLY DEMAND THAT THIS PUSHING OF THEIR BAD HABIT ONTO US HAS FINALLY NEED TO END!!!!!

A NATIONAL ADD CAMPAIGN TO SHAME SMOKERS INTO KNOWING THIS REALITY/FACT, THAT WHEN THEY SMOKE (WE ALL SMOKE UNWITTINGLY) AND DEMAND AN END….!!

THE ADD CAMPAIGN SHOULD BE LEAD BY YOUNG ACTORS....WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES.....DUE TO SMOKING......THUS SHAMING THE SMOKER WITH THE TRUTH.....AND THIS SHOULD BE BLATANT AND TO THE POINT/TRUTH SHOWING PICTURES OF DEATH BY NICOTINE....AND A SCENE COMPARING A HEROINE ADDICT SHOOTING UP WITH THEIR NEEDLE'S AND GETTING THEIR BLOOD ON PEOPLE AROUND THEM, WHICH IS THE SAME AS A SMOKERS SMOKE, BEING PUSHED INTO OUR LUNGS…INHALED THROUGH OUR MOUTH AND NOSE AND CAUSING US TO DIE BECAUSE OF THEIR BAD HABIT..!!

The "Law" . Alcohol which makes you aggresive and Cigarettes which Addict People to it is allowed but other Types of Drugs arent? Either They Forbid ALL Drugs or none . At least the Next Generation would avoid Drugs :)

Sure, as long as the law was created using democratic processes. Maybe smokers should stop throwing their butts on the ground and dispose of them like law would require any other litter.

I think there should be certain areas where it is forbidden. It makes no sense to me to walk out of the only exit of an establishment only to walk thru a group of smokers and cloud of smoke.

Why should smokers be entitled to rights, exactly? If I were to go out and spray a carcinogenic substance into the air, I would (rightly) be arrested, and yet smokers have been getting away with it for ages. Sorry if this sounds bitchy. I am not a *****, really, I just live in a city where everyone and their dog smokes and I have had it up to here with the lot of them. I wish the infernal things had never been invented.

    Rant over :D

Your not allowed to do other drugs or drink in public (outside of bars) so why should smoking be an exception? Go for it. Do it in private if you like but thats about it.

I think smokers should get an open space to smoke in, but not at restaurants, and not at the workplace. Since this is a dangerous activity for others, it deserves some regulation. But I come down on the side of individual rights concerning smoking at home, or parks. I am not a smoker BTW.

I used to think exactly the same as you, Alex. Then I moved to Vienna. Even at home there is no escape from the foul, toxic stench of some bastard's cigarette. And why do smokers always, without fail, have to light up when they're with their kids at playgrounds or walking in public parks? Is it too much to ask to grab a breath of relatively fresh air out of doors? :(

I am not a smoker, but I say NO it is not fair to restrict smokers rights. Many things we choose to do are considered health issues. We choose to eat fattening foods, that's a health issue we teach our children and the government is trying to restrict that to. The more "rights" we take away the easier it gets, soon we will have no rights.

You may be in favor of restricting the rights of people but I'm not. If someone is smoking next to you move. Letting the government dictate what a person does with their own body is pretty lame/stupid in my opinion!

Yeah, it's okay to restrict areas where you can smoke. You can't drink alcohol everywhere either.

Well lets ban cars next what is coming out of those exhausts sure it is not healthy. I smoke (for now trying to give up) it was so nice having a drink in a pub and enjoying a smoke. OK, bad to smoke inside public buildings so we huddle outside. Now public places !! Madness. One day no one will smoke and where will the Government find all that lost tax money !!!

Yes but there are smoking sheltered places for the smokers to use, and they could also use an electronic cigarette in public. So its being fair to everyone.

I think it's a good idea to have a place where people can smoke....if it's indoors, then it could be a specially vented area so others aren't exposed. I think that some airports have those. If it's outdoors, it shouldn't be right in front to the door....an area where people do not have to pass through.
I think the whole thing is unfortunate. People who are susceptible to cigarette smoke can have a reaction just from standing next to a heavy smoker, even if he isn't smoking at the time.
