Do you think it's true that the way to discover a person's real personality is to travel with them?

I have heard this expression many times - do you think it holds any merit? Do you think a person's true intentions and character are revealed on a big far-away trip?

Yes, traveling and living with someone are good ways with which to discover their personality.

Another thing I've learned is that fighting with a person reveals much of his personality and character. This is where you'll see how they will really treat you (as well as how you'll treat others) when things go bad.

In contrast, you can also learn much about a person's character when they're placed in a position of power, whether they'll abuse it or not.

Travelling with them is the ultimate way to find out how a person truly is- their tastes, their ability to cope, even their stress levels. However, you are in an unnatural situation as we do not even spend 24.7 with our spouses due to work and so on, so it can be a little stressful.

I agree with june1999, living with people is a really big way to get to know a person's real personality.
I won't say that I don't believe about traveling together but people that I've travelled with never really showed me much of how they are. It's been mostly people that I've been roommates with.

No not nessarilly a trip but the more you are with a person their personality comes out more. On a trip they may act differant because they are stressed or their true feelings toward foriegn people may come out. As in racist.
But most people i meet i can usually get a feel of what sort of personality they have, And most times i am right.
Like i either like someone straight off or i don`t. The way they talk or stand can give some of their personality away.

i do yes because if you are with them all of the time you will learn about them and how they tick however sometimes when I have gone away with a friend I have discovered things I dont like about them and them of me because we have realised through spending so much time what each of us are really like

YES...for example one my "good friends" and I thought it would be a good idea to go to Las Vegas..we always wanted to go. We were both so excited to be getting out of the house and going on the trip of our dreams...HA! it actually turned into a nightmare! She was such a ***** the whole time....couldn't make decisions...complaining and whining about everything. We fought the whole time and to this day I regret going to vegas with her. It ruined any perception I had of her. We are no longer friends.

you could only know a person very well if you have lived in the same house for years (at least 2yrs) and been thru many problems together...

I'm not sure this is entirely true, but perhaps more of a perspective thing. I believe it gets it's merit from the fact that you are basically spending all your time with that person. It is the same as living with someone.

When you think about it, most people experience a wide range of emotions in a given week. They might be happy and sad and frustrated and angry. So you're most likely to experience all these emotions along with them, then say if you just met up with them for dinner and a movie for a few hours.

Vacations can also be very relaxing and stressful. Some holidays are all about fun. You don't have to work and you're off exploring new things. For some people it can put you in a permanent state of happiness. On the flip side it can be a little stressful trying to make connections or squeezing in everything so the person you are with might be on edge more than they normally would be. In both cases it is almost as if you're experiencing a heighten aspect of their personality, and not a true measurement.

So I guess my answer would be yes with a caveat. You COULD learn more about a person, but not because they are being deceitful now and not in a way you couldn't given enough time or a different situation.

The saying i always heard is "you never really know a person until you move in with them".

Well its much the same difference really, but you get to find out all their bad habits, etc, etc.

Yes, and cheaper then moving in with them and finding out - disaster!!!

Hold up together in transit and hotel rooms; and waiting for transit; going through customs - YEP; good way to get an idea about how things could really be!!

I don't think you ever discover a persons true personality until you have been with them long enough for them to be completly comfortable in a relationship. Until then they will do and act like they think you would want them to. You never know fully until it is too late. LOL

I've always believed a persons true character and personality (both strengths and weaknesses) is revealled during times of personal crisis.
