Do you think our sense of self is merely an illusion created by the brain's ego?

I think that's very likely. That would explain how certain mental conditions can affect the sense of self; such as depersonalisation or even in extreme cases split personality.

Descartes said "I think, therefore I am." Maybe we should say "I think, therefore I am...most of the time."

yes ego identifications is what we as humans have been doing since the beginning of time. it however, is not who or what we are as individuals. we are more than our names, ages & all the things we think we are based on our experiences, thoughts, feelings & actions.

not by the brain's ego, but by the brain itself (who knows if the brain has an ego). however the sense of self is probably one of the most real things a person can feel.

The experience of consciousness is a product of the orchestrated reduction of about 10^18 quantum superpositions in the brain located in the microtubules about 60 times a second. At least, that was the current theory the last time I checked.

Hi quanta
The Mind is an emergent property of the brain. The ego is a hypothetical construct not a part of the brain. Our sense of self is real in so far as all human beings feel sensations as an individual. Nothing about human being is merely anything not least illusion. Our experience of consciousness maybe be a wonderful illusion but it is not really helpful to dismiss the scientifically verifiable world as illusion. We appear to exist as individuals yet plainly also are social beings. Big question!

No, I don't. But you're entitled to your own opinion, of course.

in phycoligy there is the ego self or the faulce self which is created by your ego, it the perception of who u think u are and the way you think others percive u .it is your own ellusion.then there is the real self this is all patrs of u wich also incudes parts of your personality which u hide from your concience mind usualy for self esteam.there the parts of us that faults or inadiquices that we chosse not to see or admite to for fear of rejection or because we fear a loss in self esteam.everyone has this.part of the path to enlightenment is the breaking down of your ego self which is increadbly painful and can cause deppresssion.it is essensaly the only way that anyone can actuly become who they truly want to be because admiting certain aspects of yourself is the first step to over coming your own inadiquicys.you must admit u have a problem before you can do anthing about it.there are many people in this world who will never admite fault in themselves and there for they never grow as they lack the courage to confrount they ego selfs.this ifo is talked about in many religions ,phycoligy and phyciatry as well

My sense of self is my true being, my body is only a horse for me to use on my spiritual journey towards the One True God.
I have to learn much to know my own self in order to thankfully conduct my life according to the Will of God.

Yup, otherwise I'd be an ant among millions of other mindless ants building a hive which they have no final concept of. (Not to say I'm not mindless)

I think so because when we entered this world we only knew of LOVE. Our EGO was later developed by society's rules of survival of the fittest and the idea that there is a first place for everything. In time we have forgotten what we really are, which are entities of LOVE. We instead are lead by our EGO's.
