Depending on what I'm doing, I drink a whole lot more than that. I probably average a gallon a day.
If it's really hot, maybe. What people tend to forget is most of the water you need comes from the food you eat, so extra water is just going to pass through with everything else.

Depending on what you eat it isn't always necessary. As long as your urine is pretty clear and not dark you're fine. You get some of that water from the liquid in food you eat. Personally, I drink a lot of water and green tea because it keeps my skin clear and I like knowing my body is getting rid of all the waste efficiently. Although it's a hassle peeing every 20 minutes.

I doubt that most people do. I drink 1-12 oz. glass of water in the morning, 1 quart (32 oz.) of water at lunch and 1-12 oz. glasses of water after dinner for a total of 56 oz.
