Do you think people who are old enough to retire should go ahead and do it so more jobs will open up for younger folk?

I believe that if you are old enough to retire and could easily live off your pension til you die... by all means, know when to bow out. Younger people need those jobs! Times are hard!

You may want them to but they dont NEED to. What if someone thats living worse off than you said you NEED to stop looking for a job because there's just too much competition out there.. .blame a power hungry govt. that tries to keep us dependent on them...not the old people you never know...by the time your there you may NEED to work until your eighty

Excuse me? The "younger folk" get the jobs anyway regardless of whether us old people can afford to retire or not. One look at my date of birth on the employment application and it ends up on the bottom of the pile or in the trash. Even if all the people who reached retirement age did in fact retire, it still wouldn't solve societies' problem which is an obsession with youth.

In my corner of the world, people who are ready and willing to retire cannot because there is no one to replace their seniority and expertise in the workplace. How can a young, new employee replace a school Principal? There needs to be balance in every workplace with both young and older staff.

Nah...if they stop working, they will get in their vehicles! Scary thought! LOL...my dad is 74 and still works, stands on his feet 9 hours a day with a full kit! *Respect*! He is still very capable, but, he is only still working for medical insurance...sad, but, true! Healthcare can kill u if you get private! I love the morals and values that the older generation still hold! They make me proud!

I would have agreed with you a few years ago, but now that the economy has been so bad for so long, we all need to hold onto whatever job we've got. Do you know how much harder it is for someone over 50 to find a decent job? Age discrimination is very real. All of my retirement is gone and savings nearly gone - I'm earning half of what I was three years ago. I'll probably be working until I'm 80 years old.

Sorry to hear that. Lots of people definitely need to keep their jobs. But the ones who could afford to retire, really need to.

I got news for you. Automation and the computer dried up the job market, not all us older folk. Add a few billion more people in a population growth and you have more peeps fighting for fewer jobs. Not really our fault at all.

I'm not blaming anyone. Just saying, if you are of retirement age and can afford it, please bow out and give someone else a chance for employment.

Exactly! So many people are having a hard time getting their careers started.

    So, I retired early.

My only regret is that my skills in manufacturing (after starving in basic research) that let me succeed are less and less important in a consumer society. Will there be value-added careers for young men and women just starting their careers?

The biggest problem for young people, they have no marketable job skills. I was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for 30 years and never had to grovel for a job. People sought me out, wanting me to come work for them. I got my first job turning wrenches at 15 and have never been unemployed. I retired at 46 having made excellent money throughout my life. To many people want a position, instead of a job. There is a shortage of engineers and other jobs that require more than a third grade understanding of math.

If they want to, then it is their choice, but need to realize that living on fixed income can be difficult. If they can work, it is a lot easier for them to pay bills and save a little.
They should not hand over jobs to the younger generation. As self entitled as they are, young people need to learn to be competitive for the positions in which they apply. We need to stop handing them things and coddling them like babies their entire lives.

I think people old enough to retire should retire. Some would argue differently because their jobs might not be physically demanding (e.g. an office job). However, when people labor hard like miners and other people who do a lot of physically, they may not be able to continue working all the way through their old age. Some people are already spent by the age of 50!

After much thought, I've decided that "old people having the jobs" is actually an irrelevant factor. What is actually at issue here is the free-market value of the new, upcoming workers/workforce ...which is now either $0.00 ...or near $0.00. This is "why" he does not replace the older worker.

To be clear, just because an older person leaves a job doesn't mean it's automatically there for a young person to move into. Some companies are offering their older employees who qualify early retirement benefits so they can avoid downsizing and laying people off. Then they give the remaining workers who aren't old enough the option of following those jobs when they move them out of town or even out of state. That's what happened to my company when I retired in April, with several other colleagues. Our positions are not being filled, because there's little work, and the people who remain will pick up the slack until the office moves to Alabama, later this year.

ah but the pertinent question is can they do that job as well, as profitable, and as efficiently.. You see. not all jobs are putting a round peg in a round hole. Many of them that are beneficial to society and are very profitable require knowledge expertise and experience, something not always found in someone just coming into the work environment!

I have much respect for the elders, but if they can retire they seriously should. I know of way too many folks who could easily retire but instead they cling to their jobs because of pride or some sense of being labeled "unable" if they retire. It's b.s. People need those jobs.

At any one moment someone may be old enough and financially well off enough, One swipe of some legislative pen and POOF!!! affordability is out the window.

Earn your place, quit whining about how hard times are and telling others when their "sell by date" has come due.
If someone is still able to do the job.. My hats off to them. Keep your job until you no longer want it or are un-able to do it.

"Earn your place"? Are you serious? Are you living in the world right now? Are you a part of the workforce? There is no "earning" anything anymore, it's all about who you know and who owes you a favor. Its hell even getting your foot in the door for a job cleaning toilets.
