This entire race you had three main groups: The Ron Paul supporters, The Romney supporters, and the anti-Romney supporters. With the Ron Paul and Romney supporters being the most loyal, idealistic, and unshakable, and all of the other anti-Romney supporters generally being fungible between the other candidates.

Throughout the campaign you saw the anti-Romney supporters try to find a reasonable alternative to Romney(which wasn't Ron Paul), which caused the various surges from Trump to Gingrich. Now the anti-Romney people have currently settled on Santorum who already had a moderate sized ba<x>se.

The Romney supporters are organized, well funded, and established in all states. The same to a lesser extent can be said of Ron Paul and his people. However Both Gingrich and Santorum are underfunded and unorganized in many states, the latter of which isn't even on some states ballots. Also both Gingrich and Santorum are fighting over the same group of voters which doesn't help either.

The winner of the 2012 Republican primary WILL be Mitt Romney, the only question is who will come in second, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich. With Santorum and Gingrich cannibalizing each others votes I'm inclined to say Ron Paul.
So to answer the question yes I do believe Ron Paul can continue gaining ground on the republican field .
