I think a drop in serotonin levels can have an impact if your brain is not producing enough of it. However, I also think the stress of school, peer pressure, finding oneself, self-esteem, home and school environment and life in general can add to the feeling of being depressed. Age has no real impact as much as the circumstances in which one lives and the individual composition.

No, school is designed to ruin peoples' lives.

Not really its probably due to lack of love and care from parents, that was the case with me anyway. Most teenagers go through a period of feeling unhappy though.

I think it has to do with bad parenting. If parents told children how beautiful and special they are then they would more than likely not be depressed .

I started having depression at he age of 15. It wasn't just school or homones, although it was part of it. I lost my brother through suicide at the age of 11, my dad died before I was born and I have a mother that suffers from depression. I had friends who constantly put me down all the time. So there was more factors that contributed to my depression. Not just school and hormones :)

At your age? YES.
Do what I did. Write down every morose, weepy feeling in a journal. Write bad poetry. Really wallow in it when you feel down, and document it in writing. (Well you could use a computer. I didn't have that option.)
Then when you're about 25, you can go back and read it and think, "OMG Was I ever that young?!?!"
What you feel now is overwhelming but I promise, one day you will feel better and look back on it with a smile. Yeah, really. I read some of my stuff that really, truly was breaking my heart at the time, and I laugh my @ss off. You are facing the toughest time of your life right now! That thing people tell you about "the best time of your life" is WRONG. You want to do things you can't do, and are forced to do things you don't want to do. It's tough right now, but it will get better.
Console yourself with the knowledge that every single person has to go through the process of growing up. It's not easy for anyone. :-)

For a young woman of child bearing age, depression is probably due mostly to being blocked from having a normal life of marriage and family. Staying in school is the feminist plan of trying to be a faux man instead of a woman and mother. That would depress almost any normal young woman.

I believe there is always a valid reason for depression, in other words all depression has a definite cause. public school is an evil indoctrination center, hormones you were born with are fine but there are so many hormones and hormone mimicking toxins in most food and water that they mess peoples minds and bodies up, but there are millions of other reasons to be depressed. why do you think you are depressed, that is your biggest clue, it doesn't mean you are right about why but it does mean that the reason you think is a clue to unravel the mystery.

It would have a lot to do with it, I would say. But not everyone is the same. It depends on the situation.
