Do you think that is applies to real life?
exposed to nothing but mental torture/pain for a long time if it was not for the thought that he was there, or rather that he was the only person that loved/cared or showed some kind of compassion, her mind would collapse. I got this concept from an anime, but i wonder if this could apply in real life also (kind of a silly question..) but could someone become mentally unstable to a point where they would almost loose thier sanity based on the above statement? what do u think?

People do need love in their lives. Psychologists have shown that when monkeys are deprived of their mother they will willingly substitute it for a barbwired monkey (imagine how that would feel). They have shown that in isolation people do go mentally crazy- they hear social stimulie like voices when there is nothing in the room. I also know that when I am isolated my mind succombs to the worst tortorous thoughts and interpretations of events that seem completely rational until you are with people again and then you realize that all the interpretations your mind gave you while you were alone are false.

Sounds like "limerence" - an intense state of desire or romantic longing for another person,or obsessive love.

The total mental breakdown you're suggesting is unlikely, but the short answer is yes,it is possible.

It's like any activity taken to the point of addiction. If you neglect every other aspect of your life to feed your obsession, and lose the object of your desire, you may turn around to find the rest of your life in ruins. That's really alone. Only the most resilient could get away psychologically unscathed, and perhaps not even them.

I can speak from experience that a lack of socialization can make one crazy. If I don't expose myself to people for too long, I tend to get really spacey and selfishly absent minded. After this, once I experience socialization against, especially if there is a particularly positive experience, I tend to go a little crazy the day afterward, especially if I'm not social that day, where things seem a little more negative than usual when they are not at all.

The key is balance, balance is vital to good health of all kinds.

It sounds to me like a very abusive relationship. Read some of the Domestic Violence stories and this is a sad reality for many women trapped in a DV situation.

The answer is yes. But not for everyone. It wouldn't bother me in the least... but, hey, I'm a bit of a rare-bird anyway.... I'm a highly cable social creature who really prefers my loner lifestyle most of the time.

Why do you ask this, by the way?

Actually yes, a lot of anime/manga is based on real life or what could happen in real life assuming your talking about shoujo manga. And yes people have got insane, i have a friend who is now diagnosed with schizophrenia because she got lonely after her Bf dumped her.
