Do you think the coup in Honduras was illegal?

Notdarcy- good point. I was a bit embarrassed by that. Obvious in retrospect!

I agree with TM2PLA. This is a sticky situation, but I find it frankly baffling that the U.S. and the entire membership of the UN are offering such unequivocal support for this guy. Talk about a slimeball. He's a disciple of Chavez and looking to make the same grab for dictatorial power.

A coup is what happens when the military takes over and stays in power. The military here was acting at the behest of the Supreme Court and Congress, and then stepped out of the way. Honduras is facing a constitutional crisis precipitated by a power-mad populist that everyone suddenly feels sorry for because he was escorted out of the country in his jam-jams.

I sure would like to believe, in the event of, say, an invasion by Venezuela, that the U.S. military under orders from Obama/Clinton would step in and defend the people of Honduras. But I'm not holding my breath. Every foreign policy decision so far by this administration seems to be a gross misfire.

No such thing as a "legal coup" - it's a contradiction in terms.

It wasn't a coup. Their constitution allowed them, their supreme court, and congress, to remove him from office. He was trying to force a vote to end term limits even after the congress and supreme court ruled against him. The military removed him and then congress appointed someone to fill in for the remainder of his term! And from what I heard from an American in Honduras, a great majority of the public is against this guy. He wants to be just like Chavez, and I cannot believe our president has taken the side of Chavez. Unbelievable!

I think that no one should be forcibly taken somewhere against there will. The government and the military forces have definitely gained to much power in some parts of the world.
