Good question.
Here is my litmus test: Look at a photo of your chosen celebrity that shows the person's hands, or even other, non-face, parts. I am more likely to look at female celebs, and what I have noticed is that many, many of the supposedly beautiful have hands that resemble the claws of carrion birds. Here's the thing. I can honestly say that I have seen those birds up close because they nested on a ledge outside my one-time office. Two excellent examples: Demi Moore and Angelina Jolie.
As for wonderful, I figure most of them have problems that are as bad or worse than the ones the rest of us have with the additional illness of wanting the center stage in the attentions of everyone, regardless of whether they are well or sliding into the abyss.

i think majority of celebrities are average looking. even some of the candidates for the miss universe are average looking. their fame, photoshop in ads, the way the camera shows their most perfect angles, and the constant exposure of their faces/bodies to men (remember that men are attracted visually), give the illusion that they are hotter than anyone. it's like the hot cheerleader vs the cute book nerd. of course beauty is still subjective but what i'm saying is that if your normal girl (not a celebrity. duh) crush/es that you think is hot-beautiful-cute suddenly becomes a celebrity, don't you think she will rise above those celebrities?
