Being friends first is a great start as you already know if there's a good chance of compatibility, and the friendship and emotional bonding are likely to be the key to the success of the relationship. If you feel a strong attraction to someone you hardly know, the attraction can only be physical and the other aspects necessary for a good relationship are left to chance.

Yes. I have to have the friendship foundation first. My most lasting relationship, most enjoyable relationships were built that way.

Love at first sight rarely lasts because it is almost always lust at first sight. Common ground, common beliefs and interests are what make a relationship last. Physical attractions and distractions let us overlook what we really need in our partner. Slow and steady is the best way to win this race,

I've gone into every relationship I've ever been in with only the intention of being friends with the person. Its not that I HAVE to be their friend first, but I find that developing a certain level of trust helps things along in a big way.

I don't know. Does it matter? It's not always that you hold on to your best friends

I'd need both. I don't know if it matters which order the relationship develops in.

Yes, that has always been a great foundation for me.
I've noticed that the guys I dated without being friends first were the worst matches....

Yes, why would you want to spend your life with someone who's NOT your closest friend?

Hmmm, yes and no. The ex I have the best friendship with was a total stranger when we first made love.

Pfff... how often does it happen like that I wonder.

That's the ideal situation but one I often cannot enjoy because my emotions run away with the best part of me.

It's not possible to be one without the "other"- unless your just leading them into a trap. "happy-hunting!"

Honestly, I have never done it any other way. It's good that you actually start off knowing something about them, but there are always some issues, like a friendship will be lost when the relationship ends, and how differently should you treat your friend once you start going out with them.
