See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4jq7oRxw-g for a wonderful documentary on a trip around the world by a British woman who was employed as a journalist in 1929 for the Hearst publication network. Occasional and sometimes mystifying culture clashes become evident to her, but being a national of what was then the world's largest and most powerful and most cosmopolitan empire, she manages to stay out of the fray most of the time. The documentary is just a little bit of a romance story too.<br />
The trip was made on a zeppelin, which at the time was the fastest way to go around the world, with scheduled re-fueling points at Berlin, Tokyo, and Los Angeles - and a short unscheduled stop midway through the trip at a desert island in the Pacific in order for the crew to repair damage from a typhoon.
