Exposure to light, heat, and oxygen can degrade the flavor, but do me a favor and look at the label. The part where it says "Aged ___ years"-- could be 6, 7, or 8. Whiskey has a high enough alcohol content that you can age it almost indefinitely, so long as you minimize exposure to light, heat, and oxygen. 12 months is not enough to kill it.

Oh it is definitely out of date, so carefully package it and ship it to me. I'm the only person who knows how to safely and properly dispose of it.

Whiskey or other distilled spirits in a glass bottle will last almost forever. Some 100 year old scotch was recently found, and it was still good.
Beer and wine are more fragile and need to be cared for, proper temperature, and consumed within a few months.

I know cheap young wine becomes undrinkable if you keep it too long, it should be consumed within reasonable time. The more quality wine however only gets better as you keep it longer. I don't know much about Whiskey since I don't drink that, but I guess it's similar.
There have been stories about wine bottles found in shipwrecks that sank centuries ago. If the bottle is well conserved and the water did not leak into the wine, these wines can be considered the best in the world.
