Karma, the law of cause and effect is produced by our actions. A cause is like throwing a stone in a pond.
The ripples that radiate out are the effect. You, standing on the shore, receive the results of this action. This is karma.

Good actions which benefit ourselves as well as others give rise to happiness. Continual good actions accumulate positive potential so that good things happen to you in turn.

Bad actions which harm yourself or others give rise to suffering. Bad actions store up negative potential so that bad things happen to you in turn.

If bad things happen to you but you think you've been a good person, it could be bad karma carried over from a previous lifetime.

You can shift this by doing good deeds like charity work, making offerings at your place of worship, asking for intercession prayers from your spiritual leader and doing purification (making a pilgrimage to a holy place, doing a retreat, fasting, making confession). Selfless acts or sacrificing, like giving your whole lunch to a homeless person, is a stronger good action than, say, giving them just an apple from your bag.

If nothing is moving in your life, it's an indication of neutral or stagnant karma. Good things will start happening in your life if you start doing good actions towards others. You've just got to get the momentum going.

I'm a realist. Karma is just a definition for your attitude combined with your actions.

Similar to the difference you get when you frown versus when you smile at somebody/something.

In that way, if you're always reacting to the world through a negative lens, you get more of the same. OR, you get more of the same because you're just merely perceiving that what you're getting is negative (may not be negative at all or have anything to do with you.)

Karma is a narcissistic notion, it assumes the world revolves around you and that your actions/thoughts have importance to others.

But I like to think that all the people who have been nasty to me eventually get theirs in the end. It usually happens this way. Nasty people eventually meet people who are able to give enough nasty back to make them change.

I think the saddest thing in the world is someone who is stuck in this negative perceiving. They are constantly reacting to the world negatively, perceiving it negatively and attracting negativity because of it.

Your thoughts are your actions and your actions attract a result based on your thoughts. The reality in your head, "is" the reality around you.

I believe that if you try to act positively then you have positive energy in your life. A negative outlook will have a negative effect.

Thats not to say bad things can't happen to good people, or that some bad eggs get away with things.

I believe in honesty. If you're honest and open and deal with your responsibilities then what will come back to bite you.

Karma does promote respect though, so its all good.

I wouldn't at all define it as a "notion," but as life's revolving doorway to and from lessons. The idea is that life continually presents you with aspects of the same lessons until they have been as fully lived, learned and understood as possible. The lucky among us move onto to other lessons continually. The majority of us always have something escape us, and so revisit certain situations throughout life.

of course not and absolutely yes. How is this possible? Life and reality are not simple or linear yet you must treat both as if they are and still be open to karma. Not all bad things that happen to people are karmic in nature though so be careful.

I understand Karma as a non ego thing. Yes it does have to do with your perception, but it is more than that. It is comprised of your thoughts, words, emotions, and actions! You must consciously think about others too in order to effectively produce good karma. It is not self centered at all. It is self love, and love for others that helps you bring good to you and those around you.

Negativity will create a hole into which the actions and the words you speak fall. If you allow a negative force to build within you or outside of you (through non-action for instance) you will have a hard time affecting a positive balance in your life. Negativity can draw all your activity and energy into it.

Karma is about balance but not an eye for an eye. It is more than simply balance for good deeds. It is a complete concept that incorporates the entire experience of life. It is hard for us ego centered westerners to grasp a concept that depreciates the ego and places you in the fabric of the world around you. It is supposed to help you understand that your perspective is shaped by your attitude and your actions.

A good example of karma in action is when you are told to pay what you can afford for a glass of milk. Do you cheap out and feel guilty? Do you pay too much and cheat yourself? Do you seek balance and really pay what you can afford? Both the first options might be rational in some perspective but they both lead to bad karma. One from bad thoughts (guilt) and one from bad actions (harming yourself). The balanced act is the most positive thing to do. Incorporated is the thought of how you affect the other in this equation. Perhaps gratitude and an expression of thanks for being able to make a good choice are appropriate and called for and therefore true karmic positivity has occurred.

I do. And I have plenty of proof to back me up.

My daughter is only 9, but instead of brainwashing her with religion I am teaching her to differentiate between right and wrong and to be responsible for her actions and to understand how karma works in our lives.

I don´t talk to her about heaven or hell, sins or confessions. I don´t have to.
I understand the law of cause and effect and that works for me one million times better than religion ever will.

I perceive that you're all right in some aspects but it (to me anyways) goes a bit beyond just the good, the bad and so forth... In history Buddhists talk about karma, Christians, talk about deeds, Taoists talk about it also,, and other spiritual beings express things of virtue, Different words ,meaning all the same thing. Millions of people believe in karma. These are not new teachings. Karma is the root cause of success and failure in every aspect of life. Ones success depends on ones good services in Previous lives and in this life time. Ones blockages are due to ones unpleasant services if you will in a previous life or in this life time. There are many stories in history that illustrate this karma, ie: take Chinese history of respect and honour, Emperor Shun had such a personality of uniqueness, he never blamed anyone for any problems, if anything that was related to him that turned out bad, He was considered very modest, If his workers did not perform well, he felt he did not teach them well enough. He alway's gave love to his family, compassion and respect. He was a great example of a spiritual being. His reign lasted a half century. His descendants prospered.. This was based on Confucius 's teachings. Today in modern teachings it is ignored or not taught enough. The importance of love , peace, sincerity, honesty and forgiveness.. is not being expressed enough. The important spiritual law teaches humanity that when you offer good services to others, you will receive blessings for yourself, for your future lives and for descendants. If you offer unpleasant services to others, you will learn lessons in this life and future lives and so will your descendants. It's a straightforward spiritual teaching of guidance to explain many sickness, heartbreaks and financial challenges that are directly related to karma issues. Bad karma is the spiritual debt one accumulated for ones mistakes from all previous lives and this life. How do you pay off this debt? You must pay with virtue. Good virtue has spiritual value, which is earned through good service, including love, forgiveness, compassion, peace and so on.

I want to believe.

Karma is accrued by right thoughts and right actions. At the end of our life we move to a higher or lower spiritual plane, depending on whether we have accrued good or bad karma.

It's a good system, but who knows if it works in practice?
