Does anyone else here use synonyms for friend and randomly name friends that nobody has met in conversation all in one sentence, to try and feel normal and look like you have more friends than you have?

    No. Having more or less friends isn't enough info to judge how likable or "normal" a person is

    Not particularily...If i'm talking about someone I think they don't know I'll just say "my friend", maybe "my friend from so-and-so" to add some context.
    Usually it's "I used to know this guy/girl", because i'm awful at staying in the same social circles.
    As for synonyms - 'acquaintance' comes in handy a lot.
