Absolutely. Great question that will get you many different answers. But the truth is, meditation is really very misunderstood. The method that I describe will cause serious changes to occur in your psychic structure and so I must warn you that if you don't desire serious changes to occur in your life, it's best to stick with the many Sweet n Lite approaches (such as thinking about your life, waterfalls, guided meditations and similar nonsense...)

The goal of meditation is to completely clear your mind of thought. First, understand that "thought" is a type of tension that duplicates itself in the body. In other words, the more muscular tension you have, the harder you will find it to free yourself from the tension of thought. The brain is the most overworked organ in the human body, and this is because of the constant feedback it gets from muscle tension. So the muscles must be completely relaxed. Here is a guide to achieving this:

Once you have spent a half hour doing this, then try this for the next week: sit completely still, in a lotus or cross-legged position, for at least an hour. Don't worry about meditation at this point. Merely try to still your body completely - not one movement. Pay particular attention to small rapid movements of the tongue and eyelids. Do this daily from 30-60 mins, focusing only on complete bodily stillness. The body must remain perfectly still before you can expect to achieve the same stillness with the mind.

I'm really simplifying for space here, but do the next sections only after achieving bodily stillness:

- mantra: learn a "mantra" and repeat it to yourself while trying to focus your mind only on the mantra - nothing else. This should be the only point of focus. If the mind wanders (which it will), gently bring it back. Do not proceed to the next stage until you can do this without fu(king up for at least 45 mins.

- let the mantra become quieter and quieter - until it - - and you - - disappear. Let completely go - - no focus - - no thought. This is when you will achieve true mindlessness.

When you reach this point, you will understand What To Do Next.

If you don't, please post the question, "I've lost my mind - what kind of fun can I get into next?" and I'll be happy to respond.

There are endless different ideas of what means "meditation". The easiest answer probably is "you cannot NOT meditate". Do you want to meditate *about* something? Then the easiest answer i would think is: just think about it. Do you want to reach a focussed mind, serenity, or enlightment? Leave samsara (the world of the living, of illusion, of suffering) to reach nirvana?

One advice from an old master is said to be "draw even lines on paper as exactely as you can without a ruler". For how long? Until unreachable perfection.
I like the advice to read as much books (or websites) about the topic as you can compute. After 100 books you got 100 kinds of meditations. Then forget it all and do it your own way or decide for a specific one depending on your goal.
If there is a "meditation quick and dirty to enlightenment", i would leave it alone. Meditation is something that can grow, that can go deep - a way, not a goal. Like a plant it needs time and love. So my best advice: Just do it having fun with it.

Reading a sacred verse in the Holy Books, thinking and rethinking to attain the sublime meanings and then translating them into actions. The results of our actions will become proofs to encourage more reflection to reach higher and higher understandings.
All other things (such as breathing, sitting, reciting obscure mantras...) are empty words and useless rituals.
