NO....having planets orbiting around them is not a requirement for a star to exist or to be called a star. Only SOME stars have planet orbiting around them. If memory serves, we have currently discovered something around 300 extraterrestrial planets to date. Quite a jump from the 9 in our own solar system in the 70's....technically 8 now, because Pluto has been declassified as a planet.
