Does karma exist?

Does God or a higher power punish bad people by making a series of horrible things happen to them? Or is it all just a coincidence? Do people deserve everything they get? Does everything happen for a reason?

yes it does- but it is we that create karma, not a god. It is called 'reap what you sow'- and God created the universe this way. It appears that wicked people get away with everything and everyone has to reap their consequences. It makes sense because we are all sowing seeds in other people with every interaction we have. Wicked people see the result of their seeds in others but refuse to own up to it.
In terms of you have a bad life because of stuff YOU did in a past life no- doesn't exist- it's fantasy meant to divert the true problem. But past generations inflict future generations. And people do reap what they sow. Unfortunately the we reap in others and others have to pay the consequences others planted in them.

The best way to control this is to have very solid boundaries and be careful how you let others affect you or the ones you love.

Yes! Karma definitely exists.
But the commonly held view of karma as a reward & punishment system of some higher power is erronious.

Literally translated from Sanskrit, the word karma or karman simply means action.
It pertains to action of thought, action of word and action of deed. Everything we think, say and do.
All actions create causes and, by the Law of cause and effect, the consequent effects MUST happen.
It may take a short time for those effects to manifest or it may take eons. But it is absolutely certain that as soon as the necessary circumstances are in place, those effects definitely will manifest.
Knowing this, we can choose to create better causes to obtain better effects.
Then we have nothing to fear from karma.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I've come to realize that the way I believe in Karma is different from how I originally thought of it.

I used to think that Karma was people getting what they deserve; but now I'm beginning to think that people get what they think they deserve, whether they actually "deserve" it or not...to a certain extent. I still think that some of what you do comes back to you, but you can also attract negativity (or positivity?) that you've never actually done to others...but maybe that would count as a negative act towards yourself, so it's still the same as I originally thought it was...

You bet your butt Karma exists...it's called "every action has an equal and opposite reaction"....Truer words have never been spoken. When I don't care about anything at all, everything in my life goes to sht...When I make concious choices and make sure I do everything right the FIRST time, Karma doesn't bite me in the butt and the world seems much easier to deal with..

Karma - "as you sow, so shall you reap" is not a punishment...its a natural universal law... what you put in you get back.... ..like gravity it works whether you believe it or not...

Yeah and obviously I did something horrible in my past life. Because I swear she's determined on torturing me in this one. Wish I knew what it was already so that I could fix it. I'm tired of being punished and not knowing what for.

No, it does not.

If you'd rather make a judgement about God, i suggest you read His own words and get to know Him first.

otherwise- don't cry when if you think He's punishing you.

I'm not even looking at these anymore- Here's a good question!

Karma exists - as dayenknight said - as a universal law. You can think of it as "consequences" rather than punishment. And although I believe it can be delayed or even put off, that does not work forever. Soon or late, the "educational experience" of whether our choices were a good idea or an unfortunate one , WILL strike! And then your inner consciousness knows - trouble is, if its in another life, we have forgotten what caused it; then we say its "bad luck", or "God is against me".

There's no such thing as "chance" to do with circumstances we find ourselves in... Everything has a reason.
