There's no fundamental meanness inherent in this practice that much is obvious but when someone "likes" you it's like a prompt for you to visit their profile as you may be on the same wavelength (who knows).. So what happens is that when you receive the "like" you go back to check what it was that they liked then you realize that they do not "like" what you said at all. So yes there is some harm in it... perhaps unintended but it does exist.

If I really liked what someone responded I would reply to it or carry the conversation into a message. The like button for posts is more of "I agree with your stance on this and I have nothing else to add to your statement at the moment" button.

I want to like them all for answering, but it does cheapen it. Luckily I don't ask many questions.

I guessed that was how some people were using the "like" function, as some kind of "thank-you"... but it is not that... when people "receive a like" they think (and rightly so) that someone likes their comment...and as such they will back track and investigate the "like" only to realize that in fact there comment was not given any special regard at all.... hence it was not in fact "liked". All you did was extend a handshake and then pull it away before they get a chance to shake it!

I don't usually. It sucks when someone likes everything. I like when a friend likes sometimes but not others, lets me know im happening that day ¢:
